Trainer Lindsay Hatch Back After Surgery With Hopes of Double Win at Doomben!

Written on the 10 February 2017

You can't keep a good man down it seems, with trainer Lindsay Hatch, who is also the pre-trainer for Tony Gollan, back on track after less than a fortnight after bowel cancer surgery.

Hatch has tentatively planned a trip to Doomben this Saturday where Dylan's Luck and Helarocity could provide him a winning double. He also has runners at Toowoomba but will give it a miss considering his recovery.

Hatch had little time to celebrate when he landed a career-best with four winners at Toowoomba on January 29th, when he had cancer removed from his bowel less than 24 hours later.

"When I should have been drinking champagne, I was drinking this shit to clean my body out," Hatch said. "The surgeon is very happy. He seems to have cleaned it all up, so the early stages look good."

"I've never felt as sick as I was the two days after, but things could be a lot worse. After the operation when I got a bit mobile, I walked around the wards and it brings you back to reality with these young men and women who are in a lot of pain."

Hatch does a lot of pre-training for Queensland's leading trainer Tony Gollan, who coaxed Hatch back from Melbourne where he was an assistant trainer.

"Tony and I talk twice a day," Hatch said. "He's also been instrumental in me building my own team up. Horses he doesn't think can win city midweeks or Saturdays, owners have been happy to send to me and try to win a maiden in Toowoomba."

Hatch believes both runners at Doomben are well placed. Although Dylan's Luck has failed twice at Eagle Farm, Hatch thinks a drop in distance is in the sprinter's favour.

"Brad (Stewart) said he pulled really hard and it's difficult for horses to finish off when they do that," he said. "I've freshened him up and if he can get some luck, he will be right in the finish. He's very well placed in this race."

Helarocity had two years off before Hatch took over last year and ordered another spell after just two runs.

"His first-up run was terrific and then he won as he liked last start and I feel he's improved again," he said. "He's drawn awkward, but it's a good start and if you want anyone on in Australia from a bad alley, it's Brad Stewart."
