Legendary Victorian Race-Caller Greg Miles Retiring at Easter!

Written on the 10 March 2017

Greg Miles OAM who's called more Melbourne Cup's than anyone else, will be hanging up his binoculars at his final race meeting at Caulfied's feature Easter Saturday meeting on April 15.

Known as the voice of Victorian racing and regarded as one of Australia's greatest racing broadcasters, Miles finally announced in November, after 5 year's contemplation, he would retire as race-caller in June at the end of his contract.

Miles has since decided to leave on his terms a little sooner for a couple of reasons.

"There's a couple of reasons why I've decided Easter Saturday will be my last day," Miles said.

"Firstly, it's a significant feature meeting of the Victorian racing season that is on that day and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to make that my last."

"Secondly, I called my first-ever race at Caulfield. That was back on Boxing Day in 1979 when I started out for the ABC. So there is a nice synergy of finishing where I started."

Miles has called a record 36 consecutive Melbourne Cups, two more than the legendary Bill Collins.

"By coincidence, and it was not planned this way, but it is quite nice, the late Bill Collins also retired at the corresponding meeting in 1988," Miles said.

At the 2016 Australia Day honours, Miles was awarded the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to horse racing. And the Melbourne Cup Racing Club is honouring Miles with a race in his name at the April 15 meeting.

Miles won't be going far after retirement, intending to stay in the industry with a series of projects for Racing.com.

"I am excited that I'll be able to maintain an active role in our great industry with Racing.com after my retirement," Miles said in November.

A decision has not yet been made on Miles' replacement, however a formal recruitment process is nearing completion.
