Tony Gollan Extending His Lead In Premiership!

Written on the 21 April 2017

A couple of weeks ago we highlighted the great job Tony Gollan's apprentice jockey Alannah Fancourt was doing in premiership ranking, considering she was out of action for part of the season due to her neck injury. She currently sits in second place for the premiership with 24 wins compared to Tiffani Brooker with 32 wins.

Leading Queensland Trainer Tony Gollan has extended his lead in the premiership with 67 wins to date with a 13% win strike rate and a 23% place strike rate, earning $2,842,800. Anthony Edmonds sits in second place with 52 wins.

Last year Gollan won the premiership with 86.5 wins - a record for him and his third premiership win in a row. That was with a 15% win strike rate and a 24% place strike rate, earning $4,343,000.

Gollan continues to up the ante each year, improving on his number of wins. Not bad for a man who thought he might pursue a career in football, when growing up in Toowoomba.

But he also had close ties to the stable run by his father Darryl while he was growing up and he had been a keen follower of the form. His first winner was Carbon Shadow at Clifford Park in Toowoomba. After some set-backs in the earlier days of his training career, Gollan revived his training business in 2003.

A stroke of good fortune gave his return some early momentum. Eureka Stud father-son combination Colin and Scott McAlpine gave him a Special Dane filly which they named Temple Spirit. The filly was a great success on the track, winning eight races. The association with Temple Spirit has continued with Gollan Racing enjoying tremendous success with the mare's foal Spirit Of Boom and Temple Of Boom. The latter lifted Tony's profile on to the big stage when he won a Listed Race at Flemington on Oaks Day in 2010. It also whet his appetite for the major carnivals. And the rest is history, with this year's premiership being his fourth win if he continues at this rate.

On another note, Gollan announced that his wife Jane, who is also a big part of the business, is expecting a baby.
