Great Barrier Draws Looking Good for Bjorn Baker and Peter & Paul Snowden in Doomben 10,000!

Written on the 12 May 2017

Let's take a look at this Saturday's top line up for the $700,000 Doomben 10,000 Group 1 held over 1200 metres.

Trainer Bjorn Baker is liking his chances with Music Magnate after drawing barrier 7 from 15 runners on the day.

Just landing back in Australia after the Kentucky Derby tour he said, "They tell me he's been doing everything right since I've been away."

"Jeff (Lloyd) has been riding him in all of his work and all of the reports have been very good.

"From that draw, we should be able to slot in just behind the speed and get the right run."

Music Magnate is sitting well on $6.50 with Sportsbet and Ladbrokes, currently.

The 5yo gelding finished well in first place last month at the Ellyce Galvin Victory Stakes (G2) over 1200 metres at Eagle Farm on a Soft (7) track. His last win previously, was in January at Rosehill at the Expressway Stakes (G2) over the same distance on a Good (3) track. Two Group 1 races in March weren't so grand on a Heavy track down south.

Music Magnate claimed victory in the Doomben 10,000 last year. Can Baker make it two years' running?

Trainers Peter and Paul Snowden also fared well in a barrier draw of 5 with Russian Revolution, currently the favourite at $3.20 and Redzel with barrier 3 sitting at $7.00.

Could we see a Peter and Paul Snowden quinella?

The 3yo Snitzel sired colt Russian Revolution has to date had 5 wins from 7 starts with his last win in March at Rosehill in a Group 1 on a Heavy track. April saw him finish in 6th place at Randwick at the Darley T J Smith Stakes (G1), also on a heavy track.

Redzel, another Snitzel sired gelding, yet to win a Group 1, did however claim victory last month at the Tab Hall Mark Stakes (G3) in Randwick on a Heavy track. He ran second behind Russian Revolution at the Nathan's Hotdogs The Galaxy (G1) at Rosehill in March, also on a Heavy track and another second placing earlier in March at the Group 2 Hyland Colours Challenge Stakes at Randwick on a Heavy track. These second placings came after a nice break where Redzel sprinted first over the finish line at the Mumm Stakes LR in Flemington over 1000 metres in November last year on a Good track.
