Prize Money Boost for The Everest

Written on the 10 November 2017

Racing NSW has announced that prize money for The Everest will be increased by $3 million to $13 million next year. And will increase by another $1 million in 2019 and again in 2020.

The Australian Turf Club and Racing NSW had previously pledged a boost in prize money pool through betting revenue.

The 12 slot holders who paid $1.8 million to secure a start in the race for three years, will meet with Racing NSW and the ATC later this month to discuss how the extra $3 million will be distributed.

"These prize money increases reward the loyalty and vision of the original slot holders who backed the concept," Racing NSW chairman Russell Balding said.

Given the success of the richest race in the world on turf, it's no surprise the The Everest will see a boost to the prize pool. The Everest attracted the largest crowd this century at Randwick with 33,500 turning up for the anticipated event. Punters wagered more than $12 million on the race with the TAB, which is double the amount bet on the Golden Slipper.
