Surprise Win for Stryker Sired Gelding Perpetual Crisis In Inglis Dash

Written on the 30 January 2017

Trainer Darren Weir and jockey Damian Lane must have had the stars aligned in their favour at Flemington on Saturday, combining their talents to win both the Inglis Dash with a surprise win by Perpetual Crisis, sired by Stryker and the Bitalli Handicap with 4yo gelding Goldstream.

Team Thoroughbreds has their own Stryker gelding available for syndication with a few shares still available. He had a brilliant jump-out before Christmas and he's expected to race in the coming weeks.

The $250,000 Inglis Dash (1100m) open to only those who have purchased at the Inglis Yearling Sales was a surprise win for this 3yo gelding purchased for a mere $20,000 with long shot odds of $41 matching his humble purchase price.

With an average form since May last year, the odds were not good with an inside gate which is like quicksand up the Flemington straight and Perpetual Crisis drew gate two.

Jockey Damian Lane said after the race that he was determined to keep Perpetual Crisis as far from the inside rail as possible. The son of Stryker was the closest to the inside, beating a wall of runners by half a neck ahead of Ebenos at $15.

"I held on for as long as I could because I really didn't want to go back to the inside," Lane said.

Trainer Darren Weir seemed to appear embarrassed to win as he wandered into the mounting yard.

"I said to the boys (owners) that it's good prizemoney; might as well have a throw at the stumps. Obviously the horse is going a lot better than I thought he was," Weir said.

Weir said that Perpetual Crisis' owners had been with him "Since I had my trainers' licence, so it's a big thrill for them and a big thrill for me to train a nice winner for them."

Weir gave credit to stable manager Jeremy Rogers who purchased son of Three Bridges' Stud's Stryker at the VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale.

"Jeremy buys lots of these sorts of horses," Weir said. "He gets around to the sales on his own and finds these sorts of colts... he liked him."

The current race record for Perpetual Crisis stands at 3 wins from 9 starts with prizemoney of $207,200.00.
