Interview with Terry Robinson, Director of Team Thoroughbreds

Written on the 12 September 2016

Here's a candid interview of the man behind Team Thoroughbreds, Terry Robinson, who discusses how he got started in racehorse syndication.

What initially piqued your interest in thoroughbreds, Terry?

As a young kid, growing up, thoroughbred racing interested me a lot. I remember going along to the track with my father and listening to the roar as the horses came down the straight; dreaming that I've got to be a part of this, I've got to make history.

Why did you decide to invest in registered racehorse syndication?

My desire to succeed is paramount and I want to see owners experience what I have over the years. It's always been in me to test myself in selecting the right horses and aim for the big races. I own and run another highly motivated and successful business on the Gold Coast and I'm flowing on this technique to the racehorse syndication side of things.

What is your strategy for choosing successful thoroughbreds?

Breeding, type, athleticism and looks. There's a lot of money at stake in horseracing, so I do my best to eliminate as much risk as possible. We deal with the very best. We have a great support from trainer, Tony Gollan, stock agent, John Foote and we have a process in place to eliminate as much risk as we can.

All reports state that your colts are doing well in pre-training and will be ready for trials soon... you must be getting excited about that?

Yes, so excited about this. This has been a hard long process to get us to where we are today. I remember 10 years ago, when I first went to the sales. I studied, watched, and spoke to the greats - taking in as much information as possible. And now it's just around the corner, to see all this hard work about to pay off.

And you still have shares available in your colts?

Yes, our Stryker colt - we were chasing a broodmare like Absolute Harmony for years, a well bred one and the plan was to sell the first foal. With great reports back on how he was progressing and with raps on the full sister with David Hayes, it was a no brainer but to syndicate and race this one. It's a keeper and I'm keeping a big interest in this one myself.

The Love Conquers All colt went through our sales selection process. The word is he's coming along nicely. He's full of himself and already has that competitive nature about him that should give him the winning edge.

Perhaps you can give us a little background on the colts you have available and how interested parties can go about purchasing shares?

Sure. Stryker from dam Absolute Harmony descends from a family that's produced the dual group 2 winner Eclair Choice, which has just been named South Australian Horse of the Year. And 3rd dam Burst is a Golden Slipper winner and champion 2yo. We're selling shares in this 2yo colt for $2,571.00. That's for a 5% share.

Our other 2yo colt, Love Conquers All from dam Jessica's Hope was bred on a similar cross that produced the 2014 Golden Slipper Winner Mossfun. He's paid up for the $10 million dollar Magic Million race series, $13 million dollars in QTIS bonuses, and the $3.5 million Golden Slipper. Shares are almost sold in this promising colt but you can still get in for just $5,300 with a 5% share.
