Shock Win For 2017 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas!

Written on the 16 January 2017

Saturday's $2 Million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) was a shock win for filly Flying Jess who defeated dual Group 1 winner Global Glamour and the previously unbeaten Winning Rupert.

Flying Jess ($101) trained by John Moloney at Caulfield, and ridden to victory by Tye Angland, stole the limelight from Global Glamour ($8) by a neck. Eckstein ($12) ended her four-win sequence, finishing third while the favourite, Winning Rupert ($1.70) finished fourth, two lengths behind the winner.

Winning Rupert was the first to leave the barriers and was ridden aggressively before settling on fourth place, trailing Global Glamour who had worked overtime to obtain a forward position from the second widest barrier.

Bjorn Baker trained Winning Rupert said the step-up in distance might have been his star colt's downfall.

"He had some complications in the build-up to it, which was not hidden from the media and I don't think that was the problem," Baker said.

"He had the run, he just didn't finish it off so we've just got to say maybe he's just come to the end of this prep or maybe the tough seven furlongs found hm out."

Global Glamour kicked strongly around the home turn but it was Flying Jess, her only win since last year's Group 3 SA Sires' Produce Stakes at Morphettville Parks, who surged down the outside to claim victory.

"We were in this race and we were the third qualified horse," said part-owner Joe O'Neill.

"John Moloney has said that this is the best filly he's ever trained and when she ran fouth in the Twilight Glow, we decided to give her one run into this race. We took her to Sydney and gave her a nice run, 1200m is not her go. We then brought her up here and her work has been sensational."

Flying Jess, sired by Hinchinbrook and bought for $60,000 from the 2015 Magic Millions Yearling Sales on the Gold Coast has had 2 wins from 12 starts with prize money now totalling $1,296,430.00
