NSW Prizemoney Looking Sweeter For Queensland Trainers!

Written on the 27 February 2017

With the announcement that Racing Queensland is going to trial a minimum race field of five as opposed to the previous seven, this move can certainly boost many Queensland country and remote clubs where the previous policy may have rendered some race meetings untenable.

But will it be enough when cashed up New South Wales is splurging on country racing?

The extra cash is both adding to the Queensland presence in northern parts of NSW and detracting from field sizes in southeast Queensland.

The Queensland prizemoney for midweek and provincial races is comfortably matched or bettered by NSW venues, with races considered no more difficult to win than those on Queensland soil.

On the previous Friday at Ballina, there were 91 runners and four of the eight races were won by Queensland-trained horses, while another was won by Murwillimbah-based Matt Dunn, who previously did the bulk of his racing in southeast Queensland.

Compare this to Doomben which had 63 runners on the previous Wednesday, Ipswich with a meagre 48 on Friday and 55 at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

The average number of runners from December 1 to February 17 was 9.29, compared to 10.19 for the same time frame 12 months earlier. Caloundra has seen a drop from 10.6 to 8.7 and the Gold Coast from 10.69 to 9.3.

Apart from Matt Dunn, Tony Gollan has been crossing the border as well with two of his filly's being victorious in their maiden races at Murwillimbah with Tony also making a presence in Lismore recently.
