Black Heart Bart Favourite To Win The Darley Kingsford-Smith Cup!

Written on the 26 May 2017

The unplaced run at the Darley Goodwood (G1) last week hasn't stopped betting agencies placing multiple Group 1 winner Black Heart Bart as a clear favourite ($3.40) at the Darley Kingsford-Smith Cup.

The feature race at Eagle Farm, Saturday, 27th May, the $700,000 Darley Kingsford-Smith Cup is a Group 1 weight-for-age and is run over 1300 metres. It replaces the BTC Cup, formerly over 1200 metres at Doomben.

Black Heart Bart was fortunatte to draw barrier 4 and Brad Rawiller will once again take the reins despite his 7th placing last week in Adelaide.

Trainer Darren Weir didn't feel let down by his horse last week, who was the favourite, having also won the Darley Goodwood last year. He was however disappointed in the way jockey Brad Rawiller handled the 6yo gelding.

"He just rode him too close," Weir explained on Monday. "He didn't ride him really badly but for this horse if you ride him too close, he can't sprint at the end and that's what happened.

"He seems to have come through the run in really good order and it (backing up within a week) won't worry him. He's the type of horse that will handle that."

Weir has decided to retain Rawiller for the ride.

"It's a race that should suit him as it's weight-for-age and I'm sure he'll get a better ride this week," Weir said.

Rawiller is nearing a major milestone of winners for Weir, claiming 493 victories for the stable to date and prizemoney of $19 million.

Lindsay Park co-trainer David Hayes expects his promising 3yo colt, Derryn, to maintain his good form when he takes on older horses on Saturday. Yet to win a Group 1, he placed third at the Doomben 10,000 after winning the Arrowfield 3yo Sprint (G2) last month. He drew a nice barrier 5 and Sportsbet has faith in him at $7.00.

Clearly Innocent sits at $7.50 with Sportsbet after an outstanding win at the Luskin Star Stakes in Scone a couple of weeks ago on a Good (4) track. It's been a dry spell for this 5yo gelding with no wins or placings since winning the same race last year also on a Good (4) track. If this Not A Single Doubt sired gelding wins, it'll be his first Group 1.

Perhaps it's Counterattack's time to shine after a close second to Redzel at the Doomben 10,000 a couple of week's ago. The Chris Waller trained 4yo also placed second at the Mark Stakes (G3) in April. A win in the Darley Kingsford-Smith Cup would be a first Group 1 for Counterattack with the Redoute's Choice sired 4yo sitting at $8.00 with Sportsbet.
