Unencumbered Progeny Swoops A Trial Win!

Written on the 29 September 2017

Unencumbered, the early two-year-old who won the 2014 Magic Millions 2YO Classic, looks like the first of his progeny are going to follow on in his footsteps.

This month we saw Unencumbered's first two-year-old, Swoop, impressively win his trial at Gosford.

The John Sargent-trained colt travelled back in the field before sprinting to the finish line, with Andrew Adkins winning his 800 metre heat by half a length going away under his own stream.

Swoop was purchased for a mere $30,000 at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale by John Sargent and judge Paul Moroney, so he will be eligible for Magic Millions, just like his sire.

Swoop has some nice pedigree as well with Katique, a half-sister to Group 2 winners Happy Morning and Fatal Attraction from the Princess Tracy (IRE) family that produced Australian Horse of the Year, Typhoon Tracy.

As Unencumbered yearlings were popular at the sales this year, selling for up to $150,000, with a quarter of his first crop of two-year-olds already named, we expect Swoop to be one of the first of many of his progeny getting ready for racing in the coming weeks.

One of Unencumbered's other progeny, I Stole Your Love, out of Orutan (NZ), a Gary Portelli-trained filly, came second in a trial at Warwick Farm earlier in the month.

The dam won a couple of starts, 1000m and 1400m and was stakes placed.

"I Stole Your Love is a beautiful big filly by Unencumbered. She's a big striding filly who I expect to be strong late," Gary Portelli said.

I Stole Your Love has her first start at Randwick on Saturday. This is Orutan's first foal to race.
