Melbourne Cup Tips from Team Thoroughbreds & Associates!

Written on the 6 November 2017

It's the one big race we always look forward to seeing each year and it's upon us tomorrow, when the whole nation stops what they're doing to watch and listen to the pounding hooves at Flemington.

We gathered some of our team members and associates to give their tips for the 2 mile race.

First up director of Team Thoroughbreds, Terry Robinson shares his top 3 picks:

20 Wall of Fire - Barrier 15 - Great run in the Herbert Power, hit the line well, Williams on board

5 Marmelo - Barrier 16 - Stormed ahead from well behind to come 6th in Caulfield Cup

22 Rekindling - Barrier 4 - A great jockey in Corey Brown who won this race before and should get a good run from barrier 4

Jen Marie who is the administrator at Team Thoroughbreds is taking a different approach for her picks. Jen has chosen based on intuition and a few different methods at that.

5 Marmelo - Barrier 16 - Horse number 5 came to mind and interesting enough it has been bumped to favourite

6 Red Cardinal - Barrier 24 - Not the best barrier draw but I'm feeling attracted to red for some reason.

19 Single Gaze - Barrier 11 - I just like the feel of this one and I noticded that barrier 11 is the most successful gate for the Melbourne Cup

When I first thought about a winner for the Cup, the name Suzie came to mind. I cannot see any horses with an association to Suzie (possibly one of the owners) or we have 22 Rekindling - Barrier 4 whose sire of dam is Salse which is similar to Suzie - a big assumption but it's the best I can come up with.

Ricky Robinson from Team Thoroughbreds has given us a few picks for the Cup.

9 Max Dynamite - Barrier 2 - This horse ran a good half-length second to Prince of Penzance at the 2015 Melbourne Cup. He's only had 4 starts since then but did win his last start over 3400 metres in Ireland.

20 Wall of Fire - Barrier 15 - Should be able to do okay from barrier 15 under master jockey Craig Williams

10 Ventura Storm - Barrier 6 - Reported to have been doing well and had a top run two starts ago when he came second to Winx at the Turnbull Stakes.

Gibbo from Brissy Races shares his 2 tips for this competitive race.

The more I look at the race, the more I feel Marmelo and Almandin are the main winning hopes. They are exceptional stayers who just need some luck in running to fight the Cup out.

2 Almandin - Barrier 14 - Rises 4kg on last years' win but forgive last start when I'm sure it was just a fitness run and the stable would have been easy on him with this in mind.

5 Marmelo - Barrier 16 - Has plenty of upside. Serious horse who will go into better races.
