Jockey Kerrin McEvoy Takes the Reins of Emirates Stakes Favourite, Folkswood

Written on the 10 November 2017

When Kerrin McEvoy is finished with his ride on favourite, Redzel at the Darley Classic he will once again take the reins in the next race on Saturday at Flemington, the $2m Emirates Stakes on the English favourite, Folkswood.

Tom Melbourne was scratched Friday morning, leaving 13 runners in the Emirates Stakes field with the Charlie Appleby-trained Folkswood leading the market at $5 with Sportsbet.

Tom Melbourne trained by Chris Waller was reported to be suffering from some lameness in the off side front leg.

Folkswood has run twice in Australia with a win in the Cranbourne Cup (2025m) last month and then came third behind Winx and Humidor in the Group 1 $3m Cox Plate (2040m).

It's reported that Folkswood has pulled up in great style and is ready to tackle another Spring Carnival Group 1.

"We couldn't be happier with him," Appleby's travelling foreman Chris Connett said.

"He came out of the race (Cox Plate) very well and he did his last serious gallop on Saturday.

"She (Winx) is a superb mare and running against her is kind of like knocking your head up against a brick wall.

"We would've taken our chance and tried our best but it does make it easier (that she's not in the race)."

Rosehill Guineas winner Gingernuts (NZL) has had plenty of support in the betting for the Stakes along with Darren Weir-trained Cliff's Edge who won the Ladbrokes Classic at Caulfield last month. Both challenge the favourite at $6.
